Why Is My Vape Spitting?

Spitting is often tied to bubbling which we explain in Why Is My Vape Bubbling

Getting a mouthful of hot e-liquid is never pleasant. If your vape is spitting, crackling or popping when you inhale, it’s usually a sign that too much liquid is pooling inside the coil or airflow chamber.

It’s a common problem, especially with pod-based systems or older coils, but there are simple ways to fix it and prevent it happening again. In this guide, we’ll explain why vape spitting happens, how to stop it, and when it’s worth upgrading to a better-built device.

What Is Vape Spitting?

Spitting happens when unvaporised e-liquid shoots up through the mouthpiece during use. You might hear a popping sound, feel droplets hit your tongue, or see liquid building up inside the pod.

It’s not dangerous, but it is annoying. In some cases, especially with high-powered kits or faulty coils, it can even result in slightly hot droplets hitting your lips.

What Causes It?

There are a few reasons your vape might start spitting:

1. Over-saturated coil
If your coil is holding too much e-liquid and not heating it fast enough, some of that liquid will pop and spit instead of turning into vapour.

2. Inhaling too hard
Taking fast, sharp draws can pull more liquid into the coil than it can handle, flooding it and leading to spitback.

3. E-liquid pooling
When the vape sits unused, liquid can collect around the coil or in the airflow chamber. When you next inhale, it spits.

4. Low wattage or slow ramp-up
In some adjustable kits, a low power setting may not fully vaporise the liquid on each puff. This leaves extra liquid behind, ready to spit next time.

5. Coil damage or poor design
Worn-out or cheaply made coils may not absorb or heat evenly. This leads to hot spots, spitback and leaking.

How to Stop a Vape From Spitting

Gently tap the device mouthpiece-down
This helps remove pooled liquid from the coil or chimney. Use tissue to catch any excess.

Take softer puffs
Slow, steady inhales give the coil time to heat properly and prevent overfeeding.

Keep your device upright
Laying it flat allows liquid to flood the coil, especially overnight. Store it upright when not in use.

Check and clean the mouthpiece
Use a cotton bud or tissue to dry the mouthpiece and airflow holes. Remove any visible condensation or e-liquid buildup.

Swap the pod or coil
If spitback continues and the pod is older than a week, replacing it is usually the quickest fix.

Avoid overfilling
If using refillable pods, leave a small air gap and don’t top up all the way to the brim.

Is It a Sign of a Faulty Device?

Not always. Spitting can happen even with high-end kits, especially in humid environments or after the device has sat unused for a while. That said, constant spitting, poor flavour and popping noises are signs the coil or pod isn’t functioning properly.

If you’re dealing with this regularly, it might be time to move on from refillables or entry-level devices.
