Firstly, we recommend that you see the causes in Why Does My Vape Taste Burnt
If your vape tastes burnt, harsh or dry, it’s usually a sign the coil has overheated or the wick inside has dried out and scorched. Most vapers have experienced it at some point and wondered if there’s a way to reverse the damage.
So, can you actually unburn a vape? Or is it a case of replacing the pod and starting again? In this guide, we’ll look at what causes that burnt flavour, whether it’s fixable and how to avoid it happening again.
Inside every vape pod or tank is a coil surrounded by cotton. The cotton soaks up e-liquid and the coil heats it to create vapour. When there’s not enough liquid reaching the cotton, the coil overheats and burns the dry wick instead. This scorches the cotton and produces that unmistakable burnt flavour.
Here’s why it happens:
Vaping on an empty or low pod
Not letting the pod sit after filling (known as priming)
Chain vaping with no time for the wick to resaturate
Using high wattage on a coil not built for it
Overusing an old coil that’s past its lifespan
If the coil is only slightly dry and caught early, you might be able to recover it. But once cotton has been scorched, it’s unlikely the burnt flavour will go away completely.
You can try the following if the coil isn’t fully ruined:
1. Stop using it immediately
Give the pod or coil time to soak by letting it rest upright for 10 minutes. If it was just dry from heavy use, this might help.
2. Take a few gentle, non-powered pulls
Draw air through the device without pressing the fire button. This can help pull e-liquid into the wick.
3. Refill the pod if it’s low
Always make sure your pod or tank has enough liquid to fully soak the wick.
4. Lower your power setting (if applicable)
If you’re using a device with adjustable wattage, reduce the power and take slower puffs to avoid overheating the coil.
If the burnt taste continues after this, it’s best to replace the pod or coil entirely.
Burnt coils are frustrating but easy to avoid with a few simple habits:
Always let new pods or refilled tanks sit for 5 to 10 minutes before use
Don’t vape on an empty pod
Take smooth, measured puffs rather than long chain hits
Keep your device charged so it maintains consistent performance
Replace your pod or coil every 5 to 10 days depending on usage
Once a pod starts losing flavour or vapour production drops, it’s time to change it. Waiting too long increases the risk of burning the coil.
If you’re fed up with trying to unburn pods or guessing when to change your coil, it might be time for a more consistent setup.
Our 6000 Puff Vape collection features rechargeable kits with long-lasting mesh coil pods that are sealed, prefilled and designed for clean, reliable flavour without dry hits or burnt taste.
You won’t need to refill, change coils or worry about wattage settings. Just puff, recharge when needed and enjoy a smooth experience all the way through.
Once a vape coil is burnt, there’s usually no saving it. If caught early, you might recover some flavour, but in most cases, a burnt coil needs replacing.
Prevent it by keeping your pod full, giving it time to soak, and vaping gently. And if you want to avoid the problem altogether, explore our 6000 Puff Vape range for a cleaner, easier way to vape every day.
No dry hits. No burnt cotton. Just better vaping.
