Find out which devices suit you in Types of Vapes and if you’re completely new to vaping, it can feel a bit overwhelming at first. There are different types of devices, various ways to inhale and a whole range of terminology you’ve probably never heard before.
The good news is that vaping is easy once you get the basics down. Whether you’re switching from smoking or just curious, this guide will walk you through how to vape properly, how to inhale, and how to choose the right device for your needs.
To begin, you’ll need a vape device and e-liquid. Most beginners start with:
A pod system or prefilled vape kit
E-liquid or pods with a nicotine salt formulation
A device that’s rechargeable, easy to use and TPD-compliant
You don’t need to jump into complicated mods or advanced kits. In fact, starting simple is usually the best way to get comfortable.
Our 6000 Puff Vape collection includes beginner-friendly devices that require no filling, no coil changes and no settings to worry about.
If you’re using a pod system or prefilled vape, follow these steps:
1. Charge the device
Make sure your vape is fully charged using the USB-C cable provided.
2. Insert the pod
If the pod is prefilled, click it into place. If it’s refillable, fill it with e-liquid, then let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes before use.
3. Inhale gently
Most modern vapes are draw-activated, so just inhale slowly through the mouthpiece. Don’t puff too hard or too quickly, as this can flood the coil or lead to coughing.
4. Wait between puffs
Give the coil a few seconds between inhales to stay saturated and avoid dry hits.
5. Recharge and replace as needed
When the flavour drops off or vapour weakens, recharge the battery or replace the pod. Most pods last several days with moderate use.
There are two main ways to inhale when vaping:
Mouth-to-lung (MTL)
This mimics how most people smoke cigarettes. You draw the vapour into your mouth first, then inhale it into your lungs.
Take a slow, gentle draw
Hold the vapour in your mouth briefly
Inhale into your lungs and exhale
MTL is ideal for beginners and works well with high-nicotine devices like pod kits.
Direct-to-lung (DTL)
This method is more like taking a deep breath. You inhale the vapour straight into your lungs in one continuous motion. It’s used with low-nicotine, high-vapour devices and is not recommended for new users.
For most people starting out, MTL feels more natural and gives a smoother experience with less coughing.
Unlike cigarettes, vaping doesn’t burn out or need to be finished in one go. You can take a few puffs whenever you like, then put it down. Some people vape throughout the day in small bursts, while others use it more like a cigarette break.
Pay attention to how your body feels. If you’re getting light-headed or jittery, you may be using a nicotine strength that’s too high or vaping more than needed.
Here’s a rough guide to help you choose:
20mg (2%) nic salt – for heavy smokers or those needing strong nicotine delivery
10mg (1%) nic salt – for lighter smokers or casual use
0mg – for those who want the flavour and sensation without nicotine
If you’re unsure, start with 10mg and adjust based on how you feel. Most prefilled pod systems are available in multiple strengths.
Don’t inhale like a cigarette on your first puff. Go slow and gentle
Don’t chain vape non-stop. It can dry out the coil or cause a burnt taste
Don’t overfill refillable pods. Leave a small gap to prevent leaking
Don’t ignore the burnt taste. That’s your coil telling you it’s done
Don’t leave your device flat in a hot car or pocket. Store it upright when possible
Learning how to vape is simple once you understand how the device works and how to inhale properly. Start with a low-maintenance pod kit, take your time and choose the right nicotine level for your needs.
If you’re looking for an easy way to start without the mess or hassle of refilling, check out our 6000 Puff Vape collection. These kits are perfect for beginners, fully legal in the UK and built to deliver smooth, consistent flavour with zero maintenance.
