Does Heathrow Airport Have a Smoking Area?
If you’re travelling through Heathrow and wondering whether you can smoke before your flight, the answer is yes—but only before security. Once you pass through to departures, smoking and vaping are strictly prohibited. Heathrow has made clear efforts to support a smoke-free environment inside its terminals.
Smoking at Heathrow – Before Security
Designated smoking areas are available outside the terminal buildings, before you pass through security. These zones are clearly marked, and you’ll find them near the main entrances of all terminals, including Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5.
This is the only place you’re allowed to smoke or vape at the airport. If you’re planning to smoke, it’s advised to do so before checking in or entering security, as you won’t be able to exit once you’re airside.
After Security – No Smoking or Vaping Allowed
Heathrow does not provide smoking areas after security in any of its terminals. There are no terraces, lounges or enclosed spaces for smoking or vaping in the departures area. Once you’ve cleared security, you’ll need to wait until you reach your destination if you want to smoke.
If you attempt to smoke or vape in the terminal or boarding areas, you may face fines or removal from the premises.
Vaping Rules
E-cigarettes and vapes fall under the same restrictions as traditional cigarettes. You can use them only in designated outdoor areas before security. Heathrow’s policy applies to all indoor spaces, including toilets and changing rooms, and the use of vapes in restricted areas may result in penalties.
If you’re carrying a vape in your hand luggage, make sure any e-liquid is under 100ml and placed in your clear plastic liquids bag for screening.
Final Word
Heathrow Airport does have smoking areas—but only outside the terminals and before security. Once you’ve passed through to departures, smoking and vaping are no longer allowed anywhere. To avoid any inconvenience, make sure you use the designated outdoor area before entering the terminal, especially if you're facing a long-haul flight or delay.
