What Is Cloud Chasing in Vaping?

Cloud Chasing – What Does It Mean?

Cloud chasing is a vaping term that refers to the act of producing large, dense clouds of vapour—usually using high-powered devices and specially designed e-liquids. It’s more than just vaping for nicotine or flavour—cloud chasing is about performance, technique, and sometimes even competition.

For many, it’s a hobby or skill-based side of vaping. For others, it’s about visual impact and a different kind of satisfaction.

How Does Cloud Chasing Work?

To chase clouds effectively, vapers use a specific setup designed to maximise vapour production. This often includes:

  • Sub-ohm coils (less than 1.0 ohm resistance)

  • High-wattage mods (typically 50W and above)

  • High-VG e-liquids (usually 70% VG or more)

  • Wide airflow settings for smoother, looser draws

The idea is to heat more e-liquid quickly, producing thick vapour that lingers in the air. Unlike MTL vaping, cloud chasing uses direct-to-lung (DTL) inhales—breathing the vapour straight into the lungs for a larger exhale.

What Gear Do You Need for Cloud Chasing?

To get started with cloud chasing, you'll need:

  • A powerful vape mod (regulated or mechanical, if you know what you're doing)

  • A sub-ohm tank or rebuildable atomiser (RDA/RTA)

  • E-liquids with high VG content (70/30 or 80/20 VG/PG)

  • Low resistance coils and good battery safety knowledge

  • Plenty of airflow and room for vapour to disperse

Important: Cloud chasing isn’t recommended for beginners. If you're using high wattage or mech mods, understanding Ohm’s law and battery safety is essential.

Is Cloud Chasing Safe?

When done properly with the right equipment and knowledge, cloud chasing can be safe. However, it does carry more risk than standard vaping if you:

  • Push your device beyond its limits

  • Use incompatible batteries

  • Lack knowledge about coil building or resistance

Also, blowing big clouds in public spaces or indoors can annoy others—even in vape-friendly settings. Be respectful of your surroundings.

Final Thought

Cloud chasing is a unique part of vape culture focused on big vapour, high performance, and often a bit of fun or flair. It’s not for everyone—but if you enjoy the technical side of vaping and love producing clouds, it can be an enjoyable (and safe) hobby when done right.
