A Beginners Guide to Vape Kits
Vape kits are designed to provide an all-in-one solution for those looking to transition from smoking to vaping or those simply interested in vaping. For beginners, understanding what’s involved can be a bit daunting. This guide aims to demystify the basics of vape kits and help you make an informed choice.
What is a Vape Kit?
A vape kit typically includes everything needed to start vaping: a vaping device, one or more coils (or atomizers), a charging cable, and sometimes a bottle of e-liquid.
What are the different types of Vape Kits?
Vape Pen Kits are compact, pen shaped e-cigarette devices which usually have a battery which is the power source of the device, a tank which holds the e-liquid and a coil which fits inside the tank and produces the vapour (coils will need to be replaced after a period of time). Vape pens are traditionally aimed at beginner vapers and were one of the first types of e-cigarettes available in the UK market. The most common use of vape pens are for high content ‘freebase’ nicotine e-liquids.

Pod Kits are the most modern e-cigarette and are also referred to as pod systems. Pod Kits are small and sleek and fit perfectly into the palm of your hand. They have a pod with an inbuilt coil instead of a tank with a separate coil meaning that these kits are relatively hassle free as there is little to no maintenance. Some Pod Kits have inhale activation which means you do not have to hold a button down to get the device to fire up. Charging times are majorly impressive, some pod kits charge in as little as 10 mins for a full battery. The most common use of Pod Kits are for high content ‘nicotine salt’ based e-liquids.

Sub Ohm Kits & Box Mods produce huge amounts of clouds and flavour. They are typically used with e-liquids with low to zero nicotine content. They are the most powerful types of e-cigarettes and often come with external batteries that are charged separately. The term sub-ohming is used when using Box Mods. With their boxy design these e-cigarettes will more than likely have adjustable vaping settings allowing you to adjust power, airflow, vaping modes, display modes and more.

Setting Up Your Vape Kit
Vape Pen Kits will need to be fully charged before the first use then a coil will need to be installed into the tank of the device. To install a coil, soak the inside of the coil with small amounts of e-liquid (referred to as priming a coil) and then insert into the tank as per the instructions. Fill the tank with e-liquid, screw the tank onto the device, turn it on and inhale.
Pod Kits are the easiest kits to set up, simply put e-liquid inside the pod provided, insert the pod into the system and inhale. Note, there are numerous pod kits that do not have a firing button so simply inhale on the device and it will start working.
Sub Ohm Kits are kits that require the most maintenance as compared to the other kits. Firstly, most sub ohm kits require external 18650 batteries, therefore, ensure these have been fully charged before putting inside the device. Once complete, prime the coil and insert it into the tank, fill the tank with e-liquid then connect to the device. Turn the device on, adjust the settings to your desired requirements such as the wattage or temperature and then press the button and inhale.
Vape Kit Maintenance & Safety
Coil & Pod Replacement: Coils and Pods will degrade over a period of time and need replacing. To know when to replace your coil or pod you will notice that either a burnt taste, harsh taste, quicker draining e-liquid or even a leaky tank/pod. It is important to note that the sweet the e-liquid the faster your coil or pod will degrade due to the chemicals found in these e-liquids are renowned for crystallising coils.
Battery Safety: Never carry loose batteries in your pocket, avoid extreme temperatures, and always use the provided charger.
E-Liquid Safety: keep away from children and pets. If ingested, seek medical attention and always read the product label.
How Do I Find the right Vape Kit?
First of all, why do you want a vape kit? Are you upgrading an existing device? Is it your first device? Are you using it for recreational vaping or is it to quit smoking? The answers to these questions will help determine which vape kit is right for you.
A Smoker New to Vaping: It is found that smokers work best with a pod kit and a mid range nicotine salt such as 10mg.
Your requirements for size and portability: Do you need something discreet? If so then a Pod Kit will work perfectly.
Small Clouds Vs. Big Clouds: Pod Kits and Vape Pens tend to produce small clouds but Sub Ohm Kits produce large amounts of clouds.
Budget: If you are looking to dip your toes into vaping but are on a budget then there are pod kits available for less than £10 such as the Aspire Gotek X. However, there are more expensive pod kits available but in general, pod kits very rarely exceed £40. With Sub Ohm kits, these kits tend to start at around £30 and can reach up to £100 inclusive of the cost of your external batteries and separate bay charger.
Features: For a entry level kit that has zero settings, vape pens and pod kits will tick all these boxes if you just want a ‘plug and play’ minimal maintenance, hassle free device, however, if you want to opt for temperature control, adjustable wattage, vape modes and puff counts then high end pod kits and sub ohm kits will tick these boxes.
Appearance: Some pod kits such as the Gotek X have seethrough cases so you can see all of the mechanics through the device, SMOK and Voopoo kits tend to have vibrant coloured kits but generally, in today’s market, most e-cigarettes are available in vibrant colours as well as traditional black, silver and white colours.
