Why Are Cuban Cigars Illegal?
Cuban cigars are often seen as the gold standard of cigars—hand-rolled, premium quality, and steeped in history. But despite their reputation, they’ve been banned in certain countries, especially the United States, for decades.
So, why exactly are Cuban cigars illegal in some places—and are they legal in the UK?
The U.S. Embargo on Cuba
The main reason Cuban cigars are illegal in the United States is due to a long-standing trade embargo against Cuba. It dates back to 1962, when President John F. Kennedy imposed the embargo in response to the Cuban Revolution and Cuba’s growing ties with the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
The embargo restricts U.S. businesses and citizens from trading with Cuba—including buying or importing any Cuban goods, cigars included. Even bringing Cuban cigars into the U.S. from a third country (like the UK or Canada) has been banned under various administrations.
As of 2024, Cuban cigars remain illegal in the U.S., although the rules have fluctuated depending on who’s in office.
Are Cuban Cigars Illegal in the UK?
No—Cuban cigars are legal in the UK.
The UK has no trade embargo against Cuba, and Cuban cigars are widely sold in cigar shops, tobacconists, and online. Brands like Cohiba, Montecristo, and Romeo y Julieta are openly available.
You can legally buy, own, and smoke Cuban cigars in the UK, subject to the same tobacco laws as other cigar products (e.g., age restrictions, plain packaging, and smoking area rules).
Why Are They Still Controversial?
The ban in the U.S. makes Cuban cigars more than just a luxury product—they’re also a symbol of political tension. Their high price and limited availability in some countries have added to their mystique.
There are also questions around labour conditions and government control in Cuba’s state-run cigar industry, which some critics use to justify continued bans.
Can You Travel with Cuban Cigars?
It depends on where you’re going:
UK to EU or other non-U.S. destinations: Yes, within personal limits and local laws.
UK to U.S.: No. Even if you legally bought the cigars in the UK, you cannot bring them into the U.S.. U.S. Customs may confiscate them and issue a fine.
Final Thought
Cuban cigars are illegal in some countries like the United States due to decades-old political tensions, not because of health or safety concerns. In the UK, however, they are completely legal and widely available—as long as you follow standard tobacco regulations.
So if you're in Britain and fancy trying one, you're free to do so—but don't pack them for a trip to the States.
